Frequently Asked Questions:

What kinds of art techniques do you teach?

I teach all fundamental art skills using traditional art materials. As primary skills, students learn to draw and paint with various materials such as pencils, pastels, acrylic, and watercolor. Students can also explore sculpture, ceramics, fiber arts, paper arts, photography, and digital illustration, such as Procreate, Photoshop, and SketchUp. The techniques taught are based on the experience and interest level of the students. Art history, appreciation, essential elements of art, and design principles are integrated and reinforced throughout the lessons.

What projects sorts of projects can students expect?

Projects are designed to explore materials, themes, and styles most beneficial to the students. We work on larger, longer projects that develop over weeks, creating something unique. Additionally, there are practice projects designed to teach skills in a fun and relaxed manner. I love experimenting and am excited to try new materials and projects, especially if students have requested them!

Do you teach art history and art appreciation?

YES! I am a passionate art-appreciaton and fascinated by artists’ lives, methods and inspirations. Our art studies include viewing and analyzing important classic and modern artists to learn how their work influenced (and was influenced by) history and culture, as well as, how they inform the work of contemporary artists.

About Me:

I am a mother of three from Asheville, NC, an art teacher for K-8 students at Thrive Educational Center in Asheville, NC, and a graduate student at the University of North Carolina. Studying art is a lifelong pursuit—there is always more to learn on the artist's journey. Even if one does not make a profession as an artist, the ability to think like one is a valuable skill no matter the work.

For instance, I graduated with a degree in Environmental Science from Warren Wilson College 20 years ago, but when I became a mother, I found my passion in sharing my love for art and for the environment with my young children and their friends. What better way to appreciate the wonder of the natural world through the wonder of imagination and art?

So while I enjoyed my children’s natural creativity and curiousity I also devoted a great deal of personal time studying the technical and creative skills necessary for mastering the traditional forms of 2D and 3D media—painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. In the last 5 years, I switched my focus to concentrate on gaining compentency in many digital platforms and formats—such as graphic design and videography.

And when they started school, I was excited to accept a position teaching art for K-8 students at a small private school in Asheville. Today

My essential goal is to teach the truth that making art is a process and an experience, not simply the finished work. Growing as an artist result from dedication to the practice of art. It does not always mean professional, well-known, or even "good" by outside standards. But, with a consistent approach, every person can grow in confidence and skill to become the best artist they can be.

I am honored to have great feedback from students and parents and some fantastic student art to share. Hope to have those up here soon!
